these rules are related to the energy of subshells. these these are as follow
rule 1 : the orbit having law ( n+1) value has lower energy
for eg for 4S orbital , n + l = 4+0=4
n+l= 3+2=5
show the 4S orbital has lower energy than 3D orbital
rule 2 : if two subshell have same value of (n+l), then d subshell with lower value of n has lower energy
for example for 4f subshell n+l= 4+3=7
for 5d subshell n+l =5+2=7
but the value of n is lesser than 4f then 5D. therefore 4f has lower energy than 5D
