Breathing takes place in the lungs and is simply a way of getting oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out of it.

Blood carries oxygen from the lungs to the cells and Carbon Dioxide from the cells back to the lungs.

During -

Breathing in :

The ribs and diaphragm muscles relax.

Breathing out :

The muscles between ribs contract lifting the rib cage up and expanding the chest.

Structure of the Lungs :

The lungs are two elastic poaches lying inside the ribs.

When the lungs are fully inflated they hold about 5 liters of air. However, when you are at rest or sleeping, only about 500cm³ of air is exchanged, During exercise, you breathe in and breathe out an extra 3 liters of air.
