The rainwater is collected from various hard surfaces such as rooftops and/or other man-made aboveground hard surfaces.Rainwater harvesting is not just for rural areas though.

In many places like rajasthan there is acute shortage of water . People there collect rainwater from their rooftops through single drain pipe in a shortage tank or even in drums and buckets for their domestic use . Overflowing rainwater from shortage tank is collected in underground pit to recharge groundwater .
