Prime Minister is the the Head of the Government of India and has a direct executive control over the 97 items in the Union List.
Prime Minister heads the Cabinet of Ministers and has absolute freedom in selecting and firing any minister. The cabinet ministers control the various ministries (Defense, Transportation, Finance, Foreign Affairs).
PM can ask the President to dissolve the Parliament any time and call for new elections.
All sessions of the Parliament are set by the Prime Minister (technically he advices the President in setting these dates).

Three duties of Prime Minister:
- He or she allocates portfolios to individual ministers. They can impose and controls the cabinet meeting agenda by accepting or rejecting the same being the chairman of the Cabinet. He is responsible for making major appointments.
- Being the chief government business coordinator, he or she mediates activities of several heads. His consultation is needed in all minor and major matters.
- Being the leader of Lok Sabha he initiates leads in the debates of a general nature. Assisting the speaker to maintain order and discipline in the house. He is responsible to furnish information to the President about Union cabinet.
