Lighter, positively charged particles form at the top of the cloud. Heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud.

during rainy season water vapours are present in air. when the particles in the clouds gets charged they travel towards the ground as ground is not charged and the water vapours act asap a conductor. lightning is nothing but follow of electrons from highly charged clouds to low charged ground
