Chapter 7

In her early days of learning, Helen worked outside with Anne. It seemed like play since she had not yet commenced formal lessons. Helen began to put words together in sentences, like “doll is on the bed.” The first book she actually read was “Reader for Beginners.” Helen did not have any fixed time-table. Miss Sullivan taught Helen whatever she found interesting. Most of their classes were held outdoors. Keller's Landing, an old tumbledown lumber-wharf on the Tennessee River was their favorite haunt. Here Miss Sullivan would teach Helen geographical phenomena such as dams, lakes, river-bed, mountains, valleys, zones, poles, etc. Miss Sullivan taught Helen practically; for example she encouraged Helen to plan a lily and observe its growth; Helen even petted tadpoles for learning purpose. At the end of the chapter, Helen praises her teacher’s greatness and uniqueness.
