Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, through a partially permeable membrane

osmosis is the process of movement of solvent between two solutions separated by a membrane(plasma membrane). generally due to the difference in the concentration (concentration gradient) of those two solutions, the solvent(mostly water - universal solvent) moves from lower concentrated solution to higher concentrated solution through the separating membrane. if more pressure is applied on the higher concentrated solution (using pistons etc) then the solvent in high concentrated solution moves to low concentrated solution through the membrane against the concentration gradient. this is called reverse osmosis.
