1.Resistance in 19th century led mainly by Confucian scholars like Phan Boi Chau

2.Other reformer like Phan Chu Trihn opposed monarchy and was against resisting the French with the assistance of the court

French thought that it was neccessory to develop colonies of they want to facilitate its resources for their own lurpose..
for it ..they need to develop a vision of modernisation in vietnamese and introduce some vestern ideas to them.
for it they rebuilt Hanoi a beautiful city with well drained canals and draining system..
and also they started Tonkin free school in1907 in order to teach vietnamese science hygiene and French ...
they even didnt hesitated in exploiting their traditional beliefs and practices..
