Answer:

White light is composed of 7 different colours.When the prism is placed at an angle of 45°(approx)with the incident light the light gets dispersed into its component colours.

Dispersion of light is the splitting of white light into its constituent colours due to refractive index of the surface and the wavelength of the light.if the light entering the prism is not of a single colour then the emergent beam also has different colours arranged in a definite order

Explanation:

This is how when passing through a prism, dispersion of light(WHITE LIGHT) happens where it splits into it's seven constituent colours. Different colours of different wavelength experience different degree of deviation and hence when put through refraction,white light splits into it's constituent colours    

(NOTE:white light consists of millions of shades of colours but to our naked eye it appears as it is only seven colours but when looked closely one can observer the different shades)
