(a) Sodium (Na) and potassium (K) are two group 1 metal. Sodium readily reacts with a halogen like chlorine (Cl) to form an ionic chloride called sodium chloride. They form ionic bonds and class of this compound is called an ionic compound. Electronic structure is illustrated below in the figure.
(b) Properties of ionic compounds are:
(i) lonic compounds are usually hard brittle.
(ii) They conduct electricity in a molten or dissolved state.
(iii) They have high melting and boiling points.
(iv) Most are solution in polar in solvents such as water.
