The carbon cycle is the process in which carbon travels from the atmosphere into organisms and the earth and then back into the atmosphere.Plants take carbondioxide from the air and use it to make food. Animals then eat the food and carbon is stored in their bodies or released as CO2 through respiration.

Green plants perform photosynthesis by utilizing CO2 and H2O in the presence  of sunlight and chlorophyll. In this process, CO2 is transformed into simple carbohydrate ( glucose) and O2 is liberated as byproduct. These glucose molecules provide energy for the synthesis of other biologically important molecules or are converted to other substances. Respiration is the usual process which releases CO2 back into the atmosphere.

There are other processes also that releases CO2 back into the atmosphere. They are----
1) Decomposition of dead bodies and organic wastes by decomposers.
2) Combustion of fossil fuels.
3) Weathering of rocks and volcanic eruptions.
