Carbon is the only element that can form so many different compounds because each carbon atom can form four chemical bonds to other atoms, and because the carbon atom is just the right, small size to fit in comfortably as parts of very large molecules. ... Carbon forms large number of compounds due to two properties:

1.) Catenation: The property of carbon to form long chain compounds with the same element  (carbon) is called as catenation.

2.) Tetravalency: Carbon has 4 free electrons in its valence shell. In order to complete its octet carbon has to gain 4 electrons , hence forming long chains.
