carbon is a non metal.it has the capacity to combine with any other compound
since it is versatile in nature. it has 4 electrons in its valence shell. it combines
with hydrogen to form hydrocarbon.

carbon is an element , a non metal with symbol C and atomic number 6. It is tetravalent that is it has 4 electrons in it's valence shell. It's atomic mass is 12 u. All living things , food materials, clothes, even our books are made up of this versatile element. Carbon forms covalent compounds that is it shares valence electrons with other atoms of carbon or with other elements.
Scientists have estimated that there are about three million carbon compounds.
Carbon has the property to form bonds with other atoms of carbon . This is called catenation. Carbon atoms can be linked by single, double and even triple bonds. No other element displays this property. The carbon based compounds are very strong and stable.

Compounds of carbon are formed with oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, chlorine and many other elements that gives rise to compounds with unique properties which depend on other elements present in the carbon compounds.
