In

the era of globalization and a progressive world, India is crippled by the yoke of casteism. Casteism has been an area of interest for many scholars who have tried to describe it but they have been able to only capture its periphery. It is a hermetic practice which has been such an intrinsic part of the Hindu culture that the suppressor and the oppressor never ventured to look for any possible solution to such inhuman discrimination. They accepted their caste as their fate and continued to practice it in consideration of their rebirth in an upper caste.

As quoted by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar,

“Turn in any direction you like, caste is the monster that crosses your path. You cannot have political reform; you cannot have economic reform, unless you kill this monster”.

The term “caste” was derived from the Portuguese word ‘casta’ which means pure or chaste. It is a form of social stratification in a hierarchy arranged in a closed group system. The varna system has divided caste on the basis of professional hierarchy and origin. According to the Brahminic literature, the Brahmans (priests) have originated from the mouth of the Brahman, Kshatriya (warrior class) materialized from the arms and the Vaishya (business class) from the thighs. The bottom-most caste, Shudras, have originated from the feet. The Dalits and Adivasis are altogether excluded from the varna system and are termed as a varna.
