➡A positively charged ion is known as Cation.

Ex- Sodium ion is formed by losing one electron by a sodium atom, magnesium ion (Mg^2+) is formed by losing two electrons by a magnesium atom.

➡A Cation contains less electrons than a normal atom. The ions of all the metal elements are cations.

➡When a normal atom loses electrons to form a cation then the number of electrons becomes less than the number of protons. Due to more protons than electrons, a Cation has a positive charge on it.

Ex- Sodium atom contains 11 protons and 11 electrons whereas in the sodium ion there are 11 protons but only 10 electrons.
