Other European countries picked up on the idea of nationalism. Nationalism became associated with liberalism. The middle class, in other words, grew to despise the aristocracy and absolute monarchy, and desired a democratically elected government in power. In terms of economics, they desired a free market with no government intervention, such as high customs duties. Previously, there existed a dispersed set of states, but now there is widespread support for a shared economic zone.
