Answer:

Cells are the basis of all living things. This fact was not always known and was not discovered until the 1660s. Scientists by the names of Robert Hooke and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek the discovery of cells.

The compound microscope had just been invented and Robert Hooke decided to observe a piece of cork. He noticed that the cork was made of small structures that reminded him of individual rooms. He called these "rooms" cells. Because the cork Hooke was observing was dead, the cells he observed were also non functioning.

Meanwhile, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek decided to observe living things such as blood and saliva under a microscope. He observed tiny parts within these substances. He named these parts "animalcules" because they resembled animals.

Hence, Robert Hooke is credited for discovery of cell while Anton von Leeuwenhoek is credited for discovery of living cell.

Answer:-

The study of cells started about three hundred years ago with the help of one powerful instrument the cell was begin to be known to humans. The scientist who have contributed to the discovery of the cell were:

1) Hans and Zacharias Jansen

2) Robert Hooke

3) Matthias Schleiden

4) Theodor Schwann

5) Robert Brown

6) Anton van Leeuwenhoek

7) Rudolph Virchow.

Robert Hooke was an English scientist who coined the term "CELL". He is the inventor of the compound microscope. He discovered cells in a cork tissue under his compound microscope. Anton van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch businessman. He described the cells he discovered in a drop of pond water that he called "animalcules". He is thus famously termed as "Father of Ancient Microbiology".

Robert Brown was an English botanist, he discovered the nucleus of the cell in plant cells(orchid).

Matthias Schleiden, a german, botanist, concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells. Theodor Schwann German zoologist. He concluded that all animal tissues are composed of cells. He proposed the cell theory.

Additional Information:

The revised cell theory states that:

  • All known living things are made up of cells.

  • The cell is a structural & functional unit of living things.

  • All cells come from pre-existing cells by cell division. (Spontaneous Generation does not occur).

Note:

A lot of scientists contributed to the discovery of the cell though Robert Hooke first described the cell and discovered it under a microscope.
