Under President Salvador Allende, Chile had a democratically elected government. It was during the 1970’s. There was a liberal government for the workers and the poor citizens of Chile. A lot of welfare policies were adopted by the government. For example, emancipating the poor such as milk for the children, restricting the entry of foreign companies, and distribution of land to landless farmers.
But in 1973 a Military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet bombed the President’s house and President Salvador Allende died. After the assassination of President Salvador Allende, General Augusto Pinochet became the President of Chile and ruled it for the next 17 years. During his presidency, anyone who supported Allende was killed.
However, there was a restoration of democracy in Chile and Military General Pinochet’s dictatorship came to an end in 1988 after a referendum.A democratically elected government was formed as the army’s role in the Chilean government was eradicated. In the year 2006, the first female President of Chile was elected and her name is Michelle Bachelet.
