What is chromatography?

  • Chromatography is a separation process involved in to separate different solutes dissolved in a same solvent.
  • The coloured components that is more soluble in water will rise faster.
  • With new advancement in technology newer techniques of chromatography have been developed.

Applications of chromatography -

  • To seperate colours in a dye.
  • Pigments from natural colours.
  • Drugs from blood.

Understand it with an activity -

Let's perform an activity to understand it better!

Materials required!

  1. Filter paper
  2. Pencil
  3. Brown sketch pen
  4. Glass with water
  5. An empty jar or glass

Procedure -

  1. Take a small strip of filter paper and draw a line on the bottom of the filter paper but leave some space too. And put a small dot of brown sketch pen.
  2. Take an empty jar or a glass and fill it with water but very less water. Then hang the filter paper on that had or glass with with water, make sure that the water is below the marked line.
  3. Keep the jar or glass undisturbed at one place. After some time you will see that water will be gradually rising up and and colours are getting sperated.
