When compounds like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, and when the pH value decreases below 5.6 then it is called acid rain. When this water flows into rivers it lowers the pH of water which endangers the life of aquatic animals. Also it lowers the pH of soil which is harmful to plants.

Hope it helps.
