In the periodic table , the elements are classified into groups and periods .

Groups :

The vertical columns in which the elements of that column will have similar

properties and similar outer shell configuration .

Periods :

The horizontal rows in which the elements are arranged in the increasing

order of their atomic numbers .

There are currently 7 periods and 18 groups in the modern periodic table .
