Just as many conventional thermal power stations generate electricity by harnessing the thermal energy released from burning fossil fuels, nuclear power plants convert the energy released from the nucleus of an atom via nuclear fission that takes place in a nuclear reactor.

Nuclear power is the power generated by nuclear processes like nuclear fission and fusion.

In nuclear fission , a heavy excited nucleus breaks up into smaller nuclei releasing tremendous amount of energy when bombarded with slow neutrons.  It's uncontolled energy can be controlled by absorbing few neutrons and then the energy can be used in nuclear reactors and nuclear power plants.

In Nuclear fusion , two or more light nuclei combine to form a heavy nucleus releasing tremendous amount of energy (when bombarded with slow moving neutrons )which cannot be controlled.  It is used in atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs.
