Commercial means for the sole purpose of making profit and not using the required material for self consumption in Social Science.

So farmers grow commercial crops means
Farmers growing crops like cotton .
Now cotton cannot be used by farmers for self use(I mean they can't eat cotton)
So it is commercial cropping.
But Farmers growing wheat is not commercial cropping.
It is substantial cropping (i.e. for their survival) because they can eat or consume wheat not directly but by processing it.
