A group of cells is called tissue along with intercellular substances which perform a specific function. Connective tissue is a type of tissue as the name suggests, supports, and binds the various body organs and tissues. They are common in any part of the body originate from the embryo’s middle germinal layer.
Connective tissue consists of several cells embedded in the intercellular network of cell-secreted protein fibres, called collagen or elastin. The cells secrete a thin gel of polysaccharides that create matrix or ground substance along with fibres.
Types of Connective tissue:-
Connective tissue is categorized into three groups:-
- Loose Connective Tissue
Loose connective tissues are found in the body, where they both require support and elasticity. Blood vessels, nerves and muscles all have loose wrappings of connective tissue. Beneath the skin, they form the subcutaneous layer along with adipose tissues, connecting muscles and other structures to the skin.
- Dense connective tissue
Fibroblast cells and fibers are compactly wrapped within the thick connective tissue. Their primary role is to support mechanical forces and to transmit them. They are a little flexible than loose connective tissue.
- Specialized Connective Tissue
Other than the two connective tissues mentioned above, there are supporting connective tissues that support maintain the right posture and support internal organs, such as bone and cartilage. Blood and lymph are connective fluid tissues that circulate throughout the body and help to bind and communicate with all organs.
