DC Motor construction :

The D.C motor consists of an armature coil which is kept in between the pole pieces of a bar magnet .

▶ A piece of soft iron is kept inside the coil .

▶ The coil is pivoted and can rotate around the axis .

▶ The coil must be placed between the opposite poles of a bar magnet and the direction of magnetic field of the bar magnet should be noted while making it .

▶ Now an axle is connected to the armature coil which helps in rotating the coil .

▶ At the end of the axle , two split rings ( rings split into halves ) are attached . They are called split ring commutators .

▶ Touching the split rings , two carbon brushes are kept . These carbon brushes helps to connect the split ring to the circuit .

▶ The carbon brushes are connected to a circuit from where electricity is drawn .

NOTE :

▶ The split rings are called the split ring commutators because they help in reversing the direction of current after every half rotation of the coil .

▶ The DC motor is a device which helps in changing electrical energy to mechanical energy . Example : electrical fan .

A DC motor is a device that converts direct current electrical energy to mechanical energy (learn about a DC motor’s working principle).

  • A DC motor is constructed with:
  • A Stator
  • A Rotor
  • A Yoke
  • Poles
  • Field windings
  • Armature windings
  • Commutator
  • Brushes

A stator is the static part of the DC machine that houses the field windings and receives the supply. A rotor is the rotating part of the DC machine that brings about the mechanical rotations.

All these parts put together make up the total construction of a DC motor.
