Sant Tukaram was a 17th century, Hindu poet and saint, who started the ‘Bhakti’ movement, mainly in Maharashtra.
He wrote several devotional poetries known as ‘Abhanga’, praising Lord Vishnu. These were written in direct and simple language, which made it easy for everyone to read and understand the meaning. ‘Abhanga’, thus became popular among common people.
His spiritual songs accompanied by music, were called ‘Kirtans’ and these motivated community-oriented worship.
Sant Tukaram had several disciples including influential men and women.
Tukaram was a late 17th century Hindu poet and philosophical thinker who proposed a certain Vedantic tradition of Bhakti thinking.
