Iron articles are painted because it prevents them from rusting. When painted, the contact of iron articles from moisture and air is cut off. Hence, rusting is prevented. So presence of air and moisture is essential for rusting to take place.

Metals, when kept in contact with air, get oxidised to their respective Oxides. This process of degradation of metal or the formation of oxides on their surface is known as Corrosion.

We usually apply paint to Paint to Iron Articles as they tend to Rust (term used for corrosion of Iron) when are kept in contact with Air. By painting Iron Articles, we hide the surface of Iron from being in contact with air. Thus Iron cannot be subjected to oxidation by the air. Hence Iron is not prone to rusting.

Hope it helps!!
