As the name sugggests, depending on source at the DC side of inverter, these are classified as Current source inverter (CSI) or Voltage source inverter(VSI).

For a CSI, power to inverter is fed by DC link inductor which keeps the value of current constant.

For VSI, power is fed by DC link capacitor which keeps the value of voltage constant.

Next question comes, when do we use CSI or VSI ?

It simply depends on type of semiconductor switch used in inverter. For example, if one is using IGBTs, then it’s a VSI.

Hope it explains in brief.

Thanks!

A current-source inverter (CSI) is one in which the source current is predetermined and the load impedance determines the output voltage.
