When the power is taken away from the central and state governments and given to the local government, it is called decentralization.
The basic idea behind decentralization is that there are a large number of problems and issues that can be best settle in local level and not in Central and state levels
The major steps taken by the government to promote decentralization in India are as follows:-
- The government has made it constitutionally mandatory to hold regular elections for local bodies.
- The governments have also made seats reserved in election bodies and executive heads of these institutions for scheduled caste, scheduled Tribes and other backward classes.
- The government have also made compulsory one third position reserved for women.
- The government has made an independent institution called state election commission which has been created in each state to conduct Panchayat and municipal elections.
- The state government are also required to give some powers and revenue with the local government bodies. This can vary from state to state.
