Decomposition of water is carried out by the process of electrolysis.

According to this process,

Water is taken in a beaker and some amount of H2SO4 is added to make it a good conductor of electricity.Now, the electrodes where inserted and connected to the battery.When current is passed the water gets decomposed in the hydrogen and oxygen in 1:8 by volumes.The hydrogen gas is obtained at cathode and oxygen gas is obtained at anode.

Water is a compound which get decomposed by the help of electricity in to its constituents.
