One theory is that deja vu is simply a function of the brain's pattern matching capability to provide understanding and meaning to what were are experiencing. The brain at the subconscious level appears to be searching stored patterns and then interpolating, extrapolating, and combing those patterns into conscious meaning. Since you are relatively unaware of much that surrounds you -- a survival and threat detection mechanism to filter stimuli -- you may have experienced elements that resulted in stored patterns -- which when subconsciously interpolated, extrapolated, or combined may present as a conscious vague, familiar feeling of experience
