“Deviation” simply means a measure of the difference between an ‘Observed ‘and its ‘Expected’ values.

Literally deviation means the difference to something, usually the mean. If the average height is x, and a value is y the difference between x and y is the deviation.

In a less literal, statistical sense deviation is a meassurement for those differences but calculated for many values. So if three people are 3, 5 and 1 cm larger than the average you could say the average deviation is 3 cm (VERY simplified!).

For quantitative variables you can measure this deviation in several ways including:

Range,Standard deviation,Coefficient of variation.
