Land degradation is caused due :
1) Mining sites are abandoned after excavation work is complete leaving deep scars and traces of over- burdening.
2) Overgrazing by cattle .
3) Over irrigation is also responsible. Due to water logging it leads to increase in salinity and alkalinity of soil.
4) The mineral processing like grinding of limestone for cement industry and calcite and soapstone for ceramic industry generate huge amount of dust in atmosphere. It retards the process of infiltration of water into soil after it settle downs on land.
5) Industrial effluents is also a major cause of land pollution.

The effects of soil erosion go beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging these waterways and causing declines in fish and other species. And degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water, which can worsen flooding. Sustainable land use can help to reduce the impacts of agriculture and livestock, preventing soil degradation and erosion and the loss of valuable land to desertification.
