Hi,

Valency of an element is the combining capacity of the atoms of the element with atoms of the same or different elements.

There are two types of valency :

1. Electrovalency

2. covalency

sweetheartakshanda: explain them
cuteashi95: ok
cuteashi95: The number of bonds that can be formed by the atoms of a particular element by sharing its electrons with other atoms with empty orbitals is called Covalency. The covalency is an integer and is always a positive number. Valency is the number of free electron/electrons in the outermost shell of an element.
cuteashi95: Electrovalency:

The number of electrons lost or gained by an atom to get stable electronic configuration in forming ionic bond is called its electrovalency.

\textbf{Valency}

Valency tells us how many electrons does an atom need to loose, gain and share to attain a stability to form a compound.

\textbf{Valency is of two types :}

1) Electrovalency

2) Covalency

» Electrovalency : The number of electrons gain or lost during formation of an ionic compound.

» Covalency : The sharing of electrons in a chemical compound. (The number of pairs of electrons that an atom can share).
