In the poem "Refugee Mother and Child" Chinua Achebe writes about the horrible scene of the war. He talks about the mothers who are in the camp with their sons. He says that the mothers have stopped loving and caring for their children. The evils of the war had made their hearts so hard and stone like that they have no feelings left for their newborns. In their mind, they have developed the feeling that their child has to die one day and so they have stopped loving them. At the same time, the poetry notices a mother with her child who loves him, admires him and appreciates him. This scene makes the poet think about the Madonna and her child who refer to the imagery of the Virgin Mary holding her son in her arms. The dilemmatic situation arrives for the poet when he thinks about the mothers who have lost feeling and care of their own child because of the result of the war.
