the whole cycle, gametes are usually the only haploid cells, and mitosis usually occurs only in the diploid phase. The diploid multicellular individual is a diplont, hence a gametic meiosis is also called a diplontic life cycle.

in diplontic life cycle dominant phase in the life cycle is yhe photosynthetic independent diploid sporophytic plant.
meiosis occurs in the spore mother celk and the gametiphytic phase is represented by the single to few called haploid which is short lived and is independent on the photosynthetic sporophyte. this paytern of life cycle is followed by all seed bearibg plants i.e. gymnosperms and angiosperms
