☛ In a discharge tube when a very high electric potential about 10000 volts is applied across at a very low pressure it is about \sf\:{10}^{-5} atm. Some radiation are emitted from cathode plate which is attract towards the anode plate. It is known as cathode rays.

☛ At this stage the discharge tube opposite to the cathode start glowing with greenish light by the phenomenon of Fluorescence.

☛ In 1897, English scientist JJ Thomson the effect of electric field over the cathode rays and give it's own theory that there cathode rays is known as electron and it it considered as negatively charged particles.
