Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy by the British devised by Governor General Lord Dalhousie (1848-1856). According to this policy if a ruler dies in the absence of a male heir the kingdom was to be taken by the British. For example Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur were some kingdoms that were annexed by the British through this doctrine.
