Each reaction has reactant which reacts to form compounds called products. Anion and cation of compounds change their placement to react and form altogether different compounds.
The standard representation is
XY + AB ------ XB +AY
This reaction in form ions
X+Y- + A+ B- --------  X+B-  +   A+Y-

Examples are --
AgNO3 + NaCl ------ NaNO3 + AgCl
