✴ Double Fertilization is a characteristic feature of Angiosperms.

✴Two fusion processes of fusing of one male gamete with egg cell and fusing of second male gamete with secondary nucleus (fusion of Polar nuclei of central cell) is called DOUBLE FERTILIZATION.



▶Two male gametes are discharged into the embryo sac by bursting of the pollen tube.

▶One of the male gametes moves towards moves towards the egg cell and the nucleus of the male gamete fuses with it's nucleus thus completing the syngamy or Fertilization.

▶This results in the formation of a diploid cell the zygote.

▶The other male gamete moves towards the two polar nuclei located in the central cell and fuses with them to produce a triploid Primary endosperm nucleus (PEN).

▶As this involves the fusion of three haploid nuclei, it is termed as Triple Fusion.

▶ Since, two types of Fusions , Syngamy and Triple Fusion , take place in an embryosac , the phenomenon is termed as DOUBLE FERTILISATION.

▶It is an event unique to Flowering Plants.
