Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was devised by British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his prowess at using logic and astute observation to solve cases

The character of Watson, as written by Conan Doyle, is modest and intelligent. He is a patient and sensitive observer, but his detecting capabilities are no match for the lightning-swift deductive reasoning of Holmes.

Mr. Ryder is an extremely passive-aggressive man and hates to have his solitude interrupted. He studies history and is happiest when he is left alone with his books. Charles observes that he seems much older than he is and that he despises anything modern: he is like a person from another time.

Peterson is a commissionaire, or hotel doorman. Peterson was heading home from an evening of fun around 4:00 o'clock in the morning when he witnessed a man being assaulted by a group of guys. Peterson is a ''very honest fellow'' and good guy, so he tried to break through and ''protect the stranger from his assailants.
