An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. ... Electric motors can be powered by direct current (DC) sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or by alternating current (AC) sources, such as a power grid, inverters or electrical generators.

Hey Friend,

Construction -

1.Core - to provide strong magnetic field when a current flows through the coil wound around it.

2. Coil - to set up magnetic field, when current flows through it.

3. Commutator - to alter the direction of current in coil after every half rotation.

4. Brushes - to supply a continuous current to the rotating coil through the commutator.

5. Magnet - to provide strong uniform magnetic field.

6. Battery - to provide current to the coil.

Working -

Working principle of DC Motor mainly depends upon Fleming Left Hand rule. In a basic DC motor, an armature is placed in between magnetic poles. If the armature winding is supplied by an external DC source, current starts flowing through the armature conductors. As the conductors are carrying current inside a magnetic field, they will experience a force which tends to rotate the armature.

1. In the coil, the current flows from A to B and the magnetic field is from north to south. Applying Fleming left hand rule, the direction of thumb points upwards, hence, the segment AB will tend to move upward, with a certain force.

2. In the coil, the current flows from C to D and the magnetic field is from north to south. Applying Fleming left hand rule, the direction of thumb points downwards, hence, the segment CD will tend to move downward, with a certain force.

Thus, a couple acts on the coil, which turns the coil in clockwise direction.

Hope it helps!
