Electroplating is one of the various applications of electrolysis. In this method, a metal object is coated with a thin layer of another method metal.

The process of coating of a metal object with another metal with the help of electrolysis is called electroplating.

The process of electroplating is done by using electrolytic cell. The object to be electroplated is called as cathode and connected to the negative terminal of a battery on D.C. source. The metal object that is to be coated/deposited over is used as anode and it is connected to the positive terminal of the battery. The electrolyte used for electroplating should be a water soluble salt of the metal to be coated/deposited. For example, if a drink played is to be electroplated with copper metal we use copper as an anode and the zinc plate as cathode. The electrolyte used in this case is copper sulphate solution. Similarly, if a substance made of iron is to be electroplated with silver we use the iron substance as cathode and the Silver metal rod/plate as anode.
