Endoplasmic Reticulum :

  • The ER membrane is similar in stucture of the plasma membrane.

There are two types of ER-

  • Rough Endoplasmic reticulum

  • Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum.

RER look rough under a micro scope because it has particles called ribosomes attached to its surface

The SER helps in the manufacture of fat molecules, or lipids, important for cell.

  • These proteins and lipids help in building the cell membrane.

This process in known as membrane biogenesis

  • One function of ER is to serve as channels for the transport of materials between various region of cytoplasm.

The ER also functions as a cytoplasmic framework.

SER plays a crucial in deoxifying many poisons and drugs.
