saponification is the process of hydrolysis of ester to form acid and alcohol

Esterification:- The reaction of alcohol with carboxylic acid is known as esterification reaction.
ex:- C2H5(OH) +CH3COOH =CH3COC2H5 +H2O.
Saponification:- The reaction if alkali metal with long chain fatty acids to give soaps is called saponification.
Or,
The alkaline hydrolysis of long chain fatty acids is also known as saponification reaction.
