esterificatio is the process of formation of sweet smelling ester by the reaction of alcohol and carboxylic acid

saponification is the process of hydrolysis of ester to form acid and alcohol

saponification is also called soap formation !

ex:- C2H5(OH) +CH3COOH =CH3COC2H5 +H2O.

Saponification:- The reaction if alkali metal with long chain fatty acids to give soaps is called saponification.

The alkaline hydrolysis of long chain fatty acids is also known as saponification reaction.
