Answer:

When a carboxylic acid and an alcohol react with each other, they produce sweet smelling liquids known as esters which are used in perfumes etc. This reaction is known as esterification reaction.

C2H5OH + CH3COOH -------> CH3COOC2H5 (ester)

When ester reacts with Sodium hydroxide, it produces sodium salt of carboxylic acid and alcohol. This reaction is known as saponification reaction.

CH3COOC2H5 -----NaOH----> CH3COONa + C2H5OH

hope this helps!
