External fertilization is a male organism's sperm fertilizing a female organism's egg outside of the female's body. Internal fertilization, on the other hand, is the occurrence of internal insemination as the mode of combining sperm and egg. ... The release of eggs and sperm into the water is known as spawning.

When fusion of male and female gametes occurs outside the body of organism. It is known as the external fertilization and mostly takes place in water. In most aquatic organism such as a majority of algae ( cladophora , ulothorix ), fishes and amphibians ( frogs) fertilization is external.

the disadvantages are : organisms have to produce a large numbers of offspring because they are extremely vulnerable to predator threatening their survival up to adult.
