External Fertilisation

In external fertilisation, fusion of male and female gametes take place outside the female body. Example organisms that reproduce through external fertilisation are : frog, fish and starfish. Let as discussed the example of frogs.

During rainy season, frogs move to slow-flowing streams of water and the ponds. When male and female come in close contact with each other, female frogs lays hundreds of eggs. Frogs egg are very delicate and are not protected by any cell unlike hens eggs. There Isabella layer that horse these eggs together and protects them. Male frogs then deposit sperms over these eggs. The sperm swim in water with the help of a long tail and has come in contact with the female eggs. This ultimately result in external fertilisation.
