The female reproductive system provides several functions. The ovaries produce the egg cells, called the ova or oocytes. The oocytes are then transported to the fallopian tube where fertilization by a sperm may occur. The fertilized egg then moves to the uterus, where the uterine lining has thickened in response to the normal hormones of the reproductive cycle. Once in the uterus, the fertilized egg can implant into thickened uterine lining and continue to develop. If implantation does not take place, the uterine lining is shed as menstrual flow. In addition, the female reproductive system produces female sex hormones that maintain the reproductive cycle.

In human females, fertilization and hence pregnancy can occur within 2-3 days of ovulation generally between 14-16 days of menstrual cycle. Sperms deposited in vagina during this period will travel to all parts of Female reproductive tract partly by movement of the latter and partly by movement of sperms. A single sperm fuses with the egg to form zygote. The fusion of sperm with the egg is called fertilization. Fertilization occurs generally in ampulla part of fallopian tube.Fertilized egg undergoes cleavage to form a ball of cells called morula. It begins to descend and reach the uterus by seventh day. By this time the embryo is transform into blastocyst. Blastocyst sends finger like outgrowth or villi into uterine wall for fixation or implantation. The contact region grows to form a special, spongy disc-shaped tissue called placenta. In placenta the villi of the embryo come in contact with blood sinuses of the uterus. Glucose, amino acids, oxygen and other useful materials pass from the mother to the embryo through this contact. waste substances and carbon dioxide generated by the embryo are transferred to mother's blood through the placenta. Total period of embryonic development is called gestation period. it is 270 days. for the sake of convenience, gestation period is considered to be 40 weeks or 280 days by calculating from the day of previous menstruation. The mature foetus is delivered. The act of giving birth to a baby is known as parturition.
