Fertilisation, also spelt fertilization (also known as conception, fecundation and syngamy), is fusion of gametes to form a new organism of the same species. In animals, the process involves a sperm fusing with an ovum, which eventually leads to the development of an embryo.

→Fertilization in animals:

The fusion of male and female gametes to produce new organisms is called fertilization or fertilization is the fusion of haploid gametes, egg and sperm, to form the diploid zygote and further develop into new organism.

⇒There are two types of fertilization:

→Internal fertilization: The fusion of male and female gametes occurs inside the female’s body. Example: Mammals such as Humans, cow, horse, dog etc.

→External fertilization: The fusion of male and female gametes occurs outside the body. Example: Fish, frog, starfish etc.
